Judgement Day

Description

In 2018, stage director Cristina Carvalhal brought us a stage adaptation of Elizabeth Costello, a novel by J.M. Coetzee. Two years later, we find her tackling a play by Ödön von Horváth. We could approach this author by quoting one of his pithy statements: “In all my plays, I have attempted to be as disrespectful as possible towards stupidity and lies.” If we add to this abruptness a love for human insufficiencies and a corrosive sense of humour, we will begin to grasp the dominant tone of the writings of this citizen of the Austro-Hungarian empire who came to live in Berlin in the 1920s, where he set himself to the task of reinventing German-speaking popular theatre. O Dia do Juízo [Judgement Day] is a play written in 1935-36, whose basic plot could easily cause it to be confused with a run-of-the-mill bourgeois drama, led by an unexpected “love” triangle. However, as it progresses the play develops into a profound parable on guilt and innocence, inquiring into the place of individual responsibility within the daily life of a community. Video pieces, created by director Pedro Filipe Marques, are one of the show’s building-blocks, instrumental in achieving the phantasmagoric dimension of guilt or, in other words, “materialising” the unusual presence of the “beyond”…
