Cordyceps

Description

Memory and democracy are the subjects that power the creative drive of Eduardo Molina, João Pedro Leal and Marco Mendonça. After Parlamento Elefante, in Cordyceps they take a concept of end as their starting-point. It is the last day of democracy, and this is the last show that can be seen in a free environment. The agent behind this situation is the Cordyceps, a fungus as real as the virus that has been lately wreaking havoc with our lives. This endoparasite – which in nature infects insects, turning them into a sort of zombies – now contaminates humans, crippling their aspirations and free will and making them fall for lies and conspiracy theories. Could it be that all of us are already infected? What will come after democracy crumbles? The malleability of memory, manipulation and parallel universes combine to place us on that fine line between truth and falsehood, in everyday life and in the theatre, with the authors of Cordyceps as its sovereign conspirators. In this on-stage dystopia, which was devised before the pandemic struck, they offer us a distorted yet truthful portrayal of the time in which we live.
