Description
Times have changed, and now is perhaps time for the theatre to use its artifices to take us to a future time that can better explain the present time. It was this allegorical approach that Tiago Rodrigues adopted as the new premise of his play, Catarina e a Beleza de Matar Fascistas [Catarina and the Beauty of Killing Fascists]. A family gets together in a house near the village of Baleizão to uphold their annual tradition: the kidnapping and killing of fascists. Now is the turn of Catarina, one of the family’s youngest members. It is a day of celebration, beauty and death. But Catarina is incapable of killing and a dispute begins, while the ghost of another Catarina, with the surname Eufémia, looms. What is a fascist? Is there room for violence in the struggle for a better world? Is it acceptable to break the rules of democracy in order to better defend it? Like a dystopian poem, the show moves away from reality to bring us closer to it, engaging in a poetic negotiation with popular culture. Thus the theatre becomes a means for our collective projection onto the future we must build.
