Eugene O’Neill wrote this “play of old sorrow, written in tears and blood” between 1939 and 1941, but the autobiographic Long Day’s Journey into Night would only be published and performed posthumously in 1956, as per his request. It is as though he were speaking through the lips of Jamie, one of the four members of the Tyronne family: “I can’t forget the past. That’s the hell of it.” Harold Bloom observed that “no dramatist to this day, among us, has matched O’Neill in depicting the nightmare realities that can afflict family life in the twentieth-century Western world”. As road companions for this Long Journey, the Ensemble company has invited a set of names that are indissociable from our artistic identity, such as translator Luísa Costa Gomes, director Ricardo Pais and actors Emília Silvestre, João Reis and Pedro Almendra. An ensemble that is fully equipped to embody these creatures, at once vulnerable and ruthless, speech-impaired and eloquent. “Stammering is the native eloquence of us fog people.”
