This semester, translation will be the subject of our Readings at the Monastery. Every attrition, every vicissitude, all the debit and credit of this important task consubstantiate themselves in the figure of the translator. Translators will be the guests present at the sessions in which we will read their translations. In anticipation of the stage productions of Nuno Cardoso and Ricardo Pais, Fernando Villas-Boas and Luísa Costa Gomes reveal to us the outcome of their intense work on, respectively, Arthur Miller’s The Crucible and Eugene O’Neill Long Day’s Journey into Night. Between April and June, we will showcase the three Portuguese translations selected during the 2022-23 Open Call of EURODRAM – European Network for Drama in Translation. This informal network promotes the translation and diffusion of contemporary dramatic texts (written within the past five years) among several partners in Europe, the Mediterranean and central Asia. The selection made takes into consideration the quality of both the original text and its translation, assessed by the Portuguese Committee of EURODRAM, coordinated by Fernando Matos Oliveira and Nuno M Cardoso.
