As Areias do Imperador

based upon the novel by Mia Couto

adapted and directed by Victor de Oliveira

Sinopse do evento

Actor and stage director Victor de Oliveira (born in Mozambique, studied in Portugal and working in Paris since 1994) adapts to the stage As Areias do Imperador [ Sands of the Emperor ], Mia Couto’s “Mozambican trilogy”. The emperor in the title is Ngungunyane, who during the late 1800s ruled over the whole southern half of Mozambique, a redoubt of political combat against the Portuguese colonial power. At the helm of a team of Mozambican, Portuguese and French actors and creators, Victor de Oliveira develops a universe into which reality and imagination, fact and fiction converge. Here, the past is not a time buried in the cemetery of History; it is a living, plural root, because memories and misremembrances are manifold, be they told by the vanquishers or by the vanquished. At the heart of As Areias do Imperador we find Imani Tsembe, a young Mozambican woman, and Germano de Melo, a Portuguese sergeant. Two voices and two destinies united in chaotic, adventurous itinerancy.
