In the early 1970s, a group of young Portuguese leap over the border, in search of better living conditions. In the company of a young smuggler, they are pursued and suffer a car accident that puts their lives at risk and forces them to make difficult choices. O Salto [ The Leap ], written and staged by Tiago Correia, aims at lifting the veil that still covers this period in Portuguese emigration, still a taboo subject due to its connections to widespread poverty and oppression, as well as to draft-evasion during the Colonial War. This project draws inspiration from real-life stories to deconstruct memories and create a crisis situation that will push the characters to reveal their contradictions. That documental background breathes life into the fiction of O Salto , allowing it to turn a plural and collective memory into the personal and transmissible experience of a theatrical show. “I took the leap. I am in the air, above the clouds. From up here, you cannot see any boundary lines, only land and sea.”
