In 1523, Gil Vicente wrote this “frolicsome farce”, the comic story of the misadventures of a woman from 16th-century Portuguese middle class who challenges family power and the medieval mindset of the society of her time. Five hundred years later, Pedro Penim rewrites the original play, turning it into a creation of our time: “This is Inês Pereira’s farce, innit?/ Then, it’s me who subverts it.” While preserving the original’s metric and rhymes, A Farsa de Inês Pereira [ The Farce of Inês Pereira ] (de)constructs a space for reflecting on female empowerment, the urgent need for intergenerational dialogue, post-work and the right to boredom. “The yoke of toil, task and duty I reject.” This show brings to a close the director’s trilogy on the family, in the wake of Pais & Filhos (2021) and Casa Portuguesa (2022). Pedro Penim brings into question some of the foundations of contemporary society and offers us a sort of manifesto for the future. “We are all refugees from the nuclear family.”“For scheduling reasons, which prevent the presentation of the show “A Farsa de Inês Pereira”, the sessions on March 12, 13, 19 and 20 were cancelled. If you have purchased tickets for any of these sessions, please contact the Teatro Nacional São João box office on 223 401 910.”
