“Honourable members, good morning. The sitting is open. Law enforcement officers, please open the galleries to the public.” Guião Para um País Possível [Script for a Possible Country] opens its pages at Teatro Carlos Alberto. A play that Sara Barros Leitão has created out of parliamentary speeches, compiled on hundreds of thousands of pages of the Portuguese Parliament Gazette over the past fifty years. From the first sittings of the 1975 Constituent Assembly, in which all the country’s possible futures were being imagined, to the declaration of a state of emergency during the COVID-19 pandemic, the show walks us through the history of Portuguese democracy. There are momentous occasions and bizarre events, tense moments and insulting remarks, as well as imaginative speeches and declarations filled with hope for the future. In a word, all that comes together to make a possible country.
