Two couples, a living room, a long night. Martha and George are the fiftysomething hosts; Honey and Nick, a quite younger couple, are their guests. As time passes and drinks are imbibed, the four characters plunge into a demonic spiral of “disappointments, betrayals, illusions and unbridled desire”. When Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? premiered on Broadway, in 1962, two things happened: the show caused unprecedented controversy and Edward Albee, its author, went straight into the pantheon of great 20th-century American playwrights. Performed countless times throughout the world, this masterwork comes now to the Teatro São João stage, directed by Simão do Vale Africano. A devastating but also poignant text. A dark comedy – quite comedic and quite dark. As Albee pointed out: “Sometimes we should draw blood.”
