Maurice Accompagné

One hundred years of music. And, if we consider that music and the body are inseparable, one hundred years of dance, too. In their latest creation, the Companhia Paulo Ribeiro presents the music of the past century as a large piece divided into three “movements”: the early 1900s, the 1960s and the present time. Each section combines pieces by a Portuguese composer and a foreign one with a new choreography by the company. This ambitious trilogy opens with Maurice Accompagné, which pairs the sophisticated and sensitive creations of the French composer Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) with the compositions of Luís de Freitas Branco (1890-1955), a reference of early Portuguese modernity. With this project, Paulo Ribeiro intends to “interweave different times, realities and geographies, thus reminding us of how music and the body transcend the moment and connect us to one another”.
