From Java to Pegu, from Siam to China, not forgetting Japan. There never were adventures and misfortunes as amazing as the ones that, between 1537 and 1558, Fernão Mendes Pinto experienced, saw and heard in the distant Orient and set down in Peregrinação [Travels]. He was a merchant, a corsair, an ambassador, a companion to kings and infidels, an earnest Jesuit who later renounced the order, “captured thirteen times and sold into slavery seventeen times”. His stories are so extraordinary that some doubted they had really happened. Stage director and performer Marcelo Lafontana takes us, through thick and thin, to every corner of the world of Peregrinação, as we journey through his fascinating theatre of Animated Forms, which combines the traditional technique of the paper theatre with film and other audiovisual resources and media. The final result, just like the great Portuguese adventurer’s book, “is a very fine tale, brimful of variety and originality”.
