Here is one of the most famous stories in literature. Anna Karenina is the wife of Alexei Karenin, an important statesman and aristocrat of Saint Petersburg, and the affectionate mother of little Sergei. During a trip to Moscow, she falls in love with Count Vronsky, a dashing cavalry officer. In defiance of all social conventions, she abandons her husband to live her love to the fullest. By doing that, she loses contact with her son and, later, her own life. But did Tolstoy tell us the whole story? In this adaptation of the famous Russian classic, Catalan stage director Carme Portaceli abstracts Anna Karenina from the amorous scandal that shocked her peers and brings her to the stage to stand trial. This time, the character is ready to tell us all that really happened, all that she felt and no one else, except maybe the author, took into consideration. George Steiner wrote: “Anna Karenina dies in the world of the novel; but each time we read the book she attains resurrection.” This will now happen on a theatre stage.
