O 25 de Abril Nunca Aconteceu

Description

What would Portugal look like if Salgueiro Maia had failed to stop at a red light and crashed into a bread delivery van, causing the Carnation Revolution to not come to pass? On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the 25 April 1974 events, the TNSJ invites the Palmilha Dentada company to create a dystopian fiction. O 25 de Abril Nunca Aconteceu [The Carnation Revolution Never Happened] describes a day in the life of the Freitas family, using an aesthetics inspired by 1940s Portuguese films, such as O Pai Tirano and O Pátio das Cantigas. The world has moved on, but not Portugal. The father works on an Internet scheme for extorting money from Portuguese-speaking women all over the world. His firm, like certain pre-1974 printing houses, is host to a clandestine subversive cell that broadcasts information concerning the Portuguese dictatorship. The PIDE (secret police) is still active, and increasingly idiotic. Crocs are banned. This show pays tribute to the Revolution’s smaller, less-evident achievements: “One day, we will become a part of the world!”
