Description
Mala Voadora, an artistic project that has been living in Porto since 2013, comes to the TNSJ for the first time with this Locker Room Talk (2017). Scottish playwright Gary McNair created this piece out of hundreds of interviews, in which he asked men to speak their unfiltered mind about women, or more precisely about what they say about women when they are not around. The result was a lot of chatter that was vile, violent and, even worse, more widespread and common than we would have liked to think or accept. Locker Room Talk is a blunt theatrical response to “grab her by the pussy”, those words that American president Donald Trump said in private but have since then become public. But the interest of Locker Room Talk is not limited to this notorious topicality, because McNair decided to have women replicate on stage the statements in his play. By transplanting this litany of misogyny to female voices, thus causing the words’ enunciation to coincide with their objects, he has created an ironic device to probe the fears and misapprehensions behind a toxic “male identity”.
