Could Be Worse: The Musical

Description

We welcome the premiere, on the São João stage, of a creation by Cão Solteiro, an artists’ collective that has been developing theatrical projects since 1997. From that year on, they have defined a work process that relies on the construction of images as well as on artistic interdisciplinarity. Could Be Worse: The Musical is the most recent chapter in a partnership with film-maker André Godinho, in which the intersection points between film and theatre are being explored. At the centre of that research we find a question Susan Sontag asked in “Film and Theatre” – “is there something genuinely cinematic?” –, to which they reply with another question: “And, in that case, is there something genuinely theatrical?” The previously produced pieces explore various premises of film and theatre, such as the relationship between images and narrative (3, 2007), the display of the construction mechanisms, challenging the position of the viewer (Play The Film, 2011), and a reflection on continuity of place, sequencing and editing (We’re Gonna Be Alright, 2017, created from special effects used in blockbuster films). In Could Be Worse, helped by the music of PZ and Rodrigo Vaiapraia, they take on one of the most loved genres of classic American cinema: the Musical. It couldn’t be better.
