Caderno de Obra

Description

Caderno de Obra [Work Notebook] shows us the Teatro São João as an open work. Inventorying various elements, from early sketches to various renovations, it shows us how the building designed by Marques da Silva may be read as a dramatic work. To launch the second volume in our Cadernos do Centenário [Centenary Notebooks] series, we have got together readers who committed themselves to the task of renovating it, at different points in the history of this National Theatre, namely Francisca Carneiro Fernandes, who presided over its board for a period of nine years. Joining her are representatives of our publishing partner, Instituto da Construção, that also took part in the rehabilitation of the building’s façades in 2014: Humberto Varum, president of the board, and Esmeralda Paupério, the book’s technical and scientific coordinator. From micro to macro, from various types of mortar to the sculptural elements in the façades, in a mixture of science and fiction, the Teatro São João comes before our eyes as a make-believe world for the first time. Amidst pictures and conversations (with architects João Carreira and Siza Vieira), Caderno de Obra also offers a reading of the city in time, becoming thus a tribute to the theatre itself as a place from which to see.
