Tartufo

Description

Originally premiered in 1664, Tartuffe is the most caustic of Molière’s comedies, a meditation on hypocrisy that incurred the wrath of the French church and courts. Tartuffe is a parvenu who uses religion to reach a higher position in the social scale, the emblem of a predatory, cut-throat society. “What time was that, and what time is this one in which we live?”, wonders director Tónan Quito, inviting us to draw lines between past and present. This show appears within the context of NÓS / NOUS, a project that enriches theatrical culture exchanges between France, Galicia and Portugal by looking at them as scenic common ground. Carried out by four theatres (including the National Theatres of Porto and Lisbon) and four drama higher schools, this project supports the professionalisation and internationalisation of students at the end of their academic careers, by bringing them into contact with internationally renowned stage creators.
