Description
And to conclude, an Encyclopaedia
With Enciclopédia Mínima we bring to a close our Cadernos do Centenário [Centenary Notebooks] collection, six volumes that gave printed form to the Teatro São João Centenary commemorations. “Enciclopédia [Encyclopaedia]” because it is driven by the same encompassing diversity that characterises such works, in which a sequence of entries is organised alphabetically. “Mínima [Minimum]” because it collects just one hundred of the thousands of original texts we have published since 1996, in various brochures, reading manuals, periodicals or books. Essays, conversations, interviews, rehearsal notes, conferences, assembled here from A to Z, make up a small library written by a collective intelligence. This anthology is a tribute to all those who spoke or wrote us, thus giving material form to the idea of a publishing project that clarifies, enriches and documents our work on the stage. Enciclopédia Mínima finds an echo in Voltaire’s advice: “We must cultivate our garden.” In Greek, “anthology” means “a collection of flowers”. Voltaire was one of the contributors to the seminal Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers.
