Rosemary vs Marjoram

Description

Jangada Teatro is a company that has over the past twenty years developed a multidisciplinary approach that combines texts and subjects of universal appeal with actors, puppets, animated forms and live music. Alecrim vs Manjerona [Rosemary vs. Marjoram] is a contemporary rewrite of The Wars of Rosemary and Marjoram, a “jocoserious” opera by António José da Silva (The Jew) that originally premiered in 1737. “A genius buffoon”, António José da Silva was a citizen-author who “sarcastically offended” the values of 1700s Portuguese society, leaving us a number of ridiculous and amusing characters, driven by intrigues and disguises. Jangada takes this timeless legacy as a starting-point, adapting it to the universe of the “reality shows” that flood our TV viewing, places where we traffic in illusions and realities. Staged by Ana Saltão and Rui Oliveira, Alecrim vs Manjerona is a sort of game show, in which every character sets out to trick the other contestants in order to achieve his goals and “win the game”, a series of situations established by an all-powerful “Voice”, who keeps offering increasingly absurd challenges. A corrosive, ingenious theatre, from which “life as it is” gazes upon us.
