Democracy Has Been Detected

All the members of the artistic team behind Democracy Has Been Detected, a project of the Momento – Artistas Independentes company, were born in a democratic context. Theirs is the post-Carnation-Revolution, post-Fall-of-the-Berlin-Wall, post-Cold-War generation. What does it mean, to live in a democracy? To have always lived in a democracy? How do we grasp it? Especially in times of fragility and menace, filled with intimations of the end. “The hard thing is to consider what comes after that end.” Staged by Diogo Freitas, Democracy Has Been Detected presents a historical, social and political reading of both our present society and the one we imagine will exist in the future, made with eyes and ears turned to the past. Echoing across times of untruth and inefficiency, the show displays itself as a generation’s cry, directed both outwards and inwards, a call to a full commitment to democracy, without taking it for granted or seeing it as someone else’s province: “This is my voice. What about yours? You. You could start peace now.”
