After MDLSX , the Italian company Motus returns with ** Tutto Brucia **, a rewriting of Euripides’ The Trojan Women , staged by **Daniela Nicolò** and **Enrico Casagrande**. All that is left of once-splendid Troy are ashes ( everything burns , says the production’s original title) and the remains of sea monsters. On an empty stage, Hecuba, Cassandra, Polyxena and Andromache lament their misfortune and the brutality of war. “What makes a life grief-worthy?” Tutto Brucia rereads the Greek drama through the words of Jean-Paul Sartre, Judith Butler, Viveiros de Castro, NoViolet Bulawayo, Donna Haraway and the live songs of R.Y.F. (Francesca Morello), causing that lament to reverberate across the lives now being lost in the waters of that same Mediterranean. More than ever, mourning has become a political issue. “Which lives matter?” The Trojan women of Tutto Brucia give a voice to all these spectres, achieving transformation through experienced pain and violence. Their metamorphosis ushers in the possibility of other forms and a future new world.
