The time has come to revisit Um Museu Vivo de Memórias Pequenas e Esquecidas [A Living Museum of Small and Forgotten Memories], the outstanding and emblematic show-reconstruction by Joana Craveiro. One actress, most of the Portuguese 20th century, nearly six hours that pass in the blink of an eye. A compilation of seven performance-lectures on the Estado Novo (the 1933-74 Portuguese Dictatorship), the Carnation Revolution and the PREC (Ongoing Revolutionary Process, 1974-75), this production is the result of an in-depth historic and political – but also affective – research on memories, narratives and images of the last 89 years of Portuguese history. Based on the collection of testimonies, private archives, casual discoveries and an exhaustive bibliographic research, this show by Teatro do Vestido fights against a hegemonic view of history by countering it with a small memory – i.e. history written by those who made it while living it, reconstructed by those who heard it being told viva voce.
