Othello

Othello

Description

Stage director Marta Pazos asks us what can we do, from where we stand today, to hold back that moment (“Now there are no pauses, it’s too late.”) in which the Moor of Venice murders Desdemona. How can we hold back that “hell” in Othello? A hell that continues to rage unabated after four hundred years, Shakespeare’s tragedy brings to the stage a number of issues we continue to discuss today, such as racism, xenophobia, violence against women, gender construction, manipulation or post-truth (yes, Iago is the “fake news” prophet). In this scenic and dramaturgic rereading by Galician company Voadora, Desdemona neither dies (“I simply held my breath for long enough to pass unnoticed.”) nor forgets. The show uses comedy (of a quite musical and choreographic sort) as a device to handle this core of pain and rage. “A theatre that is necessary and urgent. Beautiful and brave”, someone wrote in daily newspaper El Confidencial.
