Description
Hotel Europa is a documentary theatre company that explores areas in which theatre, dance and performance art intersect. Its creations provide connections between the past and present, examining the current relevance of largely ignored subjects and combining historiographic research with testimonies, family narratives and interviews. A Mina [The Mine] examines the history of São Pedro da Cova, a Portuguese town haunted by the mining facility that for almost two centuries provided many families with their livelihoods. In 1970, the coal mines were deactivated, and in 2001 they were used to store several tons of toxic waste from Siderurgia Nacional, an iron and steel company; part of that waste is still there. Drawing inspiration from close work with the community, in the form of an intergenerational dialogue focused on the mining past and the present environmental problems, A Mina activates memories, times and issues that continue as relevant today as they were in the past.
